General dentistry keeps your own teeth and gums healthy and replaces the teeth that cannot be saved. It covers gum treatment, root canal treatment, extractions, bridges and dentures. Many patients need one of these before cosmetic or implant work, and your written plan shows which treatment, how many visits it takes and the price.

## Why gums and roots are checked before cosmetic or implant work

Veneers, crowns and implants are only as stable as the gums, roots and bone underneath them. A crown placed on a tooth with an untreated root infection, or an implant placed in a mouth with active gum disease, is at higher risk of failing. That is why every cosmetic or implant plan starts with a check of:

- The gums — bleeding, pocket depth and bone level around each tooth. Gum disease is treated first.
- The roots — on an X-ray or 3D scan we look for infection at the root tips and for old root fillings that are leaking.
- Teeth that cannot be kept — they are removed and their replacement is planned together with the rest of the work.
